What is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?

by Tracy Schelle, Psy NP at Strategies for Success in Chandler, Arizona

A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice nurse who has an extended scope of practice in psychiatry. A PMHNP has either a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. PMHNP’s are able to provide mental health services some of which include: psychiatric evaluation of a client, form a medical diagnosis, order and interpret lab work, prescribe treatments including medication, implement a plan of care, and conduct psychotherapy.

My role at Strategies for Success in Chandler is medication management. An initial evaluation is about sixty minutes long and we go over medical history, psychiatric history and create a plan of care together. The plan of care includes my recommendations for treatment, which may include medication. A follow up appointment is twenty to thirty minutes long and we review how you are feeling on the medication and determine if the medication needs to be adjusted. Due to time constraints, I do not do counseling but may refer you to one of the therapists in the office. I also provide education about diagnosis and treatment, supportive care, and go over coping skills if needed.

If you or a friend/family member needs the assistance of a licensed counselor or psychiatrist, we offer quality over-the-phone and in person sessions to help fit any personal needs.
